Patents could be a tricky thing. It gives a company the power to sue its competitors. Also, it gives others the chance to stunt its competitors. Where Nokia falls in the two categories depends on what lies ahead. All we could say right now is may the truth be inexpensive for the consumers!
It seems Nokia, the Finnish-based company known for their cell phones, wants a ban be imposed against Qualcomm Inc. chipsets that are to be imported to United States soil. They have asked the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) to ban those chipsets. Allegedly, those products actually infringe on five patents that are being held already by Nokia. The patents that Nokia has claimed to have been infringed by Qualcomm are related to chipsets used in mobile phones, which includes 3G handsets. The company said the relevant patents are not essential to maintaining compliance with industry standards, and therefore Nokia can decide whether or not it wants to license them to another company.
