It has been just a few months yet a lot of mobile phone manufacturers really felt the impact of Apple Corp.’s heavily hyped iPhone. The usual titans in the industry were left making the back pages instead of the headlines. For once, they were all spectators. Then, they had to unveil their own phones and they were all bombarded with the same questions: will they compete with the iPhone? Do they have the next big thing in the mobile phone craze.
Nokia Corp. is now going back to the drawing board. This time, they plan on working on something they have failed before in achieving: gaming. The company, regarded as the world’s largest cell phone maker, has announced that it has begun global shipments of N81 and N81 8GB multimedia phones. The N81 connects to 3G mobile and Wi-Fi networks. It has a new 3D menu system, one of the first elements of a new user interface that Nokia plans to use in other new handsets. It has has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity which can also be used for gaming. There’s an FM radio too, and the N81 runs the Symbian S60 operating system, making it a capable smartphone.
